“Do we need a video on our website?”It’s a question we frequently get asked here at Solutions 8. Often when we are enhancing certain aspects of our client’s websites we ask them if they can produce for us. While this is definitely a smart move, not every client knows exactly why they need a video.

Sometimes these new clients have too many ideas and want to squeeze 20 points into a 60-second video. Others have no idea what they want, and just need someone to lead them in the right direction.

After years of working on projects that span nearly every industry, we’ve identified 2 “must-have” videos that should be the go-to for any businesses just stepping into the magic of video.

A short, mildly produced “Hello from <YOUR COMPANY HERE>”

This branded video should be featured on your website’s homepage and should be (hopefully) somewhere close to above the fold. This video should easily explain what your company does, why your product or service is special or unique and what differentiates you from the competition. The length should be relatively short, about 45 or 60 seconds and should not feature much music or graphics other than your logo. Today, we live in the YouTube generation. Meaning that people trust more “real” style videos where it doesn’t look like it’s trying to sell you. If you look at Kickstarter-style videos, they keep it transparent, honest, and most of the time…don’t feature hired talent.

2. A “Why Buy From Us” video

People like to hear why they should do business with you. Unless you have a certain product or service that no one else has, your going to have competition. You need to convince people why they should not go to Amazon and purchase a similar product. Brick and Morter businesses have an easier time with this because they can offer fast, in person customer service, easy returns, warranty support, etc. You will have to produce a video that showcases all of these features about your business and try to convert these viewers into customers. Some good topics to cover are your support system. Do you have the staff to handle calls and emails? Maybe you have a live chat feature on your site with 24/7 support? Do you have free shipping? Make sure you mention that in your video. What about returns? Are they no-questions-asked full refunds? Talk about your shipping. What are estimated delivery time windows from when they order? You want to pick out every competitive advantage you have and put it in this video.

So there you have it. It doesn’t take much time or a big budget to produce these videos. But as they say, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. With the use of video, you can pre-can your best impression, your best assets, your best features, and benefits and place them where 90% of your traffic will see it. On the top half of your homepage.
