Yes, that’s right. Gary Busey. I usually feature quotes from sagacious marketing/business heavyweights for my #1, so this may seem like quite a departure. It’s just that I’ve long been bothered by the proliferation of “shortcuts,” not only in my field, but seemingly everywhere I look.
So this quote scratched my itch this week. It’s concise, indubitable and, hey, he was on The Apprentice. I also took to my blog recently to expound upon the importance of core foundations, baseline best practices and why I wrote that book. Gary and I, we speak the truth.
- Win of the Week: We are loving Facebook this week for many reasons (see #5), but mostly because we’re killing it! In fact, one of our Facebook Ad retargeting campaigns for a national ecommerce (activewear/jewelry??) company is currently running at an average 500% return on ad spend.
It breaks down like this:

- Hot Tip: So there I was, back at #1, kvetching about short cuts and here I am about to recommend one. Let me clear things up by saying that I’m OK with shortcuts that are rooted in bedrock, only add value and don’t hurt anyone.
Kind of like “Checker Plus for Gmail,” a free, quick-install, sweet little plug-in that delivers your mail right to your screen in real time and allows you to read it, mark-as-read, save, reply or delete all without having to open up your Gmail. Awesome time-management tool!

Why: The name of the game is SEO and this one-day affair packs a lot of punch. They’ve got “two tracks of 18 industry experts, including 2 AMA style panels, 8 Q&A panels, and 2 keynote presentations,” not to mention a continental breakfast, a sit-down lunch with the speakers and a happy hour reception so you can get your network on.
From the site: “Digital marketing experts and addicts will unite to share a common passion for all things search, collaborate on solutions for clients and businesses, and have fun while learning about the latest SEO and SEM tactics.” And the whole Chicago/Navy Pier thing just sweetens the pot for me.
- 5-Minute Power Snack: Is there anything better than when an already valuable product or service improves and gets cheaper at the same time? The Facebook pixel is now badder than ever, featuring custom conversions, website-custom audiences and standard events (which measure ad performance and help your reach subsets of your custom audience).
But what has us giddy is the fact that we only have to pay if a Facebook user watches our video for over 10 seconds, as opposed the three-second charge of yore, but it still pixelates them at three! - Best-of-the-Week Outside Blog: Here’s to one of the smartest, most useful blogs I’ve had the pleasure to read in some time: WordStream’s 7 Little-Known (And Research-Backed) Lead Generation Ideas Revealed.Even though the foundations of marketing never change, attitudes, perceptions and desires do, so our job as marketers is to continually try to identify what’s coming into vogue and what’s gone from hot to not. There may be a few surprises in here for some, but each of the “7 Ideas” amounts to astute counsel that’s best not ignored.
- One of the Good Ones: You may have already heard of this one, since its positive impact has been felt by children in all 50 states and beyond. I’m talking about Childhelp, which has been helping abused and abandoned children worldwide since 1959.
I got to know this organization when I built, launched and aided in marketing for the National Association of Child Helplines. I was impressed not only by their own hotline initiatives, but by their prevention, intervention and treatment programs and became a supporter myself.
They offer several great ways to get involved, including donations, corporate sponsorships, volunteerism or by spreading the word. (And they have a super-inspiring, interesting backstory.) Love this organization and I hope you do (or will) too.
