Mastering Custom Labels in Google Ads: Your Questions Answered

Are you using custom labels in Google Ads?

If you advertise your products through Performance Max or Shopping campaigns, Google recommends using them to group products for reporting and bidding.

In this video, Solutions 8 Account Manager Tressy Dsouza answers some of the top questions about custom labels from our YouTube viewers.

Read on for a quick recap of the informative Q&A session!

Question #1: How long does it typically take for custom labels created through Feed Rules (now Attribute Rules) to start working in Performance Max campaigns?

The minimum time that it takes is about 30 minutes, but if your account has a lot of products and you have a large inventory, it can take up to a few hours. It is also worth noting that it may take up to 24 hours for them to appear in your reporting.

Multiple Custom Labels Google Ads

Question #2: Can I use multiple custom labels simultaneously to create more complex segmentation? For example, custom label 0 for product categories and custom label 1 for price ranges?

Absolutely. That’s the beauty of custom labels—you have five custom labels which go from custom label 0 to custom label 4, and you can use them for different criteria based on your segmentation logic. So, it can be for product categories, or you can set them up for price ranges.

Most people also want to segment their campaigns by how the products are performing, so for your top performing products you can have different segmentations or a separate custom label altogether for different profit margin products. You have a lot of flexibility with those five custom labels.

Question #3: What happens if my product titles change over time? Will the rules based on title contents automatically update the custom labels or would I need to manually adjust my rules?

You need to make sure that when you are setting up the feed rules, the rule needs to be such that it is going to dynamically change as well. So, for example, if you have a title that is seven words long, you don’t want to add the feed rule with the entire title pasted in it.

Instead, pick and choose one word from the title. That way, as long as that one word remains the same in your future titles, it will automatically update.

At this point in the video, Tressy provides an example from a past video to help viewers get a better understanding of what she means.
